The YWCA was founded in England in 1855 and is one of the largest

and oldest multicultural women's organization in the world.  

There are YWCA is 120 countries serving 25 million women and their

families each year.  This involves 40,948 volunteers, 3,424 Board members,

over 6,000 part time and over 6,000 full time staff.

Each YWCA provides services in their community that are most needed for

women and their children. YWCA Jamestown provides housing, day care,

alternative school for pregnant and parenting teens, summer day camp, food reimbursement program, after school programs, pregnancy prevention and a supervised visitation and exchange program.  

YWCA USA which serves 2 to 3 million people annually, focuses its mission-driven work in three key areas where they believe they can have the most impact:

Did You Know

The YWCA...

  • began the first boarding house for female students, teachers and factory workers in New York City in 1858

  • held the first training school for practical nursing in Brooklyn in 1983

  • hosted the first interracial conference in Louisville, KY in 1915

  • started the first women's pension fund in 1924

  • extended services to Japanese-American women and girls incarcerated in WWII Relocation Centers

  • was the first women's organization invited to join the U.S. Olympic Committee multi-sport division

  • organized the first National Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism, responding to Rodney King's beating/Los Angeles riots
